Dear Neighbor, My name is Charlotte McKamy, and I’m on the City Council in Mary Esther. I am seeking your assistance in an urgent matter. Dr. Karen Chapman, Director of Health Okaloosa County has issued the latest metrics for Okaloosa COVID infections and deemed the situation CRITICAL. Without safety measures in place, COVID cases grow exponentially and can overwhelm our hospitals. I will attend the County Commission meeting in Shalimar next Tuesday morning July 21st at 8:15 am (details below) to urge them to take two actions:
First, to pass a mandatory mask mandate for the county. Mayor Robinson in Pensacola has done so, and is urging Escambia government to extend the mandate.
Second, to go ahead and close the beaches NOW. Although this will be difficult, there is no question that the constant influx of tourists is a major factor in spreading and re-spreading the virus to our local citizens.
We have the support of at least one commissioner. We need two more.
I hope to get a large group of healthcare workers and Okaloosa citizens to attend this meeting and speak directly to the Commissioners. You may not agree with my proposals, but please, come share your knowledge and expertise for steps that can be taken now! Get there early and fill out a speaker's card. You will be allowed three minutes to speak. If you cannot attend, please forward this to others in the medical field who may attend.
It is difficult for local cities to be effective without the County Commission. If we show up in big numbers, they WILL listen.
Thank you. A big shout of of thanks to all you hardworking nurses, doctors, hospital staff, and medical clinics out there. I’ve learned through this that medical facilities are a very important part of our infrastructure. You should be the leaders in charge of COVID response and prevention.
Also, please flood the commissioners with emails and phone calls as soon as you can. They get a lot of email so multiple phone calls are most effective.
Please call, text or email me with questions. Also, I’d love a text saying you will attend.
Sincerely, with gratitude
Charlotte McKamy
