Congressional District 1 Representative Matt Gaetz is once again working for himself and Donald Trump, instead of the people of his district. While the citizens in the Panhandle are struggling with some of the fastest growing number of COVID cases in the state, Mr. Gaetz traveled to Wyoming on the Taxpayer's dime trying to cause trouble for Liz Cheney, a Republican Representative from Wyoming. What did Ms. Cheney do to deserve Gaetz's wrath? She followed her conscience and did what she knew to be the right thing, she voted to impeach former President Donald Trump for inciting a riot of his followers, who he prompted to attack the United States Capitol and interrupt the work of the US Congress. She did her duty.
Mr Gaetz has not done his duty to his district, instead he makes speeches on Fox News and in Congress, telling lies about the Election of President Joe Biden. His speeches led people to believe that the election was a fraud, when all facts point to that claim being a lie. He tried to have legitimate votes of American citizens thrown out so the results of the most secure election in the history of the United States could be overturned. He continues to repeat these falsehoods, which foments anger and pits those who believe his lies against their neighbors who know the truth. His continual falsehoods only make life more difficult for his constituents.
While the people and businesses of his district are in desperate need of a better COVID relief plan and an organized vaccination rollout, Matt Gaetz ignores these needs and continues to foster, disrupt and create chaotic situations to derail the American people. Once again he is trying to be in the limelight for his own gains, personally and politically, with no thought as to how he could best serve his constituents. He has been a continual embarrassment to the constituents of Congressional District 1, whether they are Republicans, Democrats or Non Party Affiliates.
When Congressman Gaetz isn’t on Fox News or traveling to other states, he’s in Congress obstructing progress. His last 24 votes included 15 No votes and 6 Abstentions. He voted No on reaffirming the House of Representatives’ commitment to the orderly and peaceful transfer of power (HR1155). He abstained from voting on a bill condemning QAnon and rejecting the conspiracy theories it promotes (HR 1153). Gaetz also voted No on the last COVID relief bill.
With so much at stake for families, small businesses, the environment and the economy, Northwest Florida deserves a Representative who is in Washington working hard for his constituents, not making promises to “break” our system of government as he did at the rally in Wyoming. If we had a Democratic Representative standing up for Northwest Florida we would have had someone in Washington who worked to get us immediate relief from FEMA after Hurricane Sally. We would have had a voice to insist on an investigation of Skansa and its business practices which caused untold damage when their work barges floated around Pensacola Bay during the hurricane.
A Democratic Representative would be working to provide help for the increasing number of unemployed and homeless people in Northwest Florida. A Democratic Representative would be working with other representatives to fight against systematic racism and police brutality, and support an equitable justice system. A Democratic Representative would be supporting common sense gun reform to make the United States a safer place to live.
Democrats in the Panhandle are serious about electing officials who work for everyday people, not people who are only interested in getting publicity for themselves. If you feel the same way, please reach out to your local Democratic Party and help us fire Mr. Gaetz in 2022.
